
The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council was formed on 1 April 2008. This is a step-up from its precursor the WSH Advisory Committee (WSHAC) which was formed in September 2005. The Council has statutory powers and more muscle to lead and partner the industry in engagement and capability building efforts.

| WSH Council Forum - Raising Shipyard Safety Standards |
The Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC), with Ministry of Manpower (MOM) organised a WSH Council Forum on Raising Shipyard Safety Standards on 17 July 2008.
The forum attracted more than 300 participants and highlighted to industry stakeholders the key safety measures needed in shipyards. A 400-page WSH manual on safety for marine industries was also distributed during the forum.

| Building WSH Capabilities in Singapore |
The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council has developed a strategy paper entitled "Building WSH Competencies in Singapore". The paper focuses on two main areas, i.e. equipping stakeholders with the right skills and capabilities to better manage WSH; and building strong supporting institutions to guide the identification and development of such skills and capabilities. | Case study booklet on fatal accidents in the construction industry |
The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) (Construction & Landscaping) Committee has produced a booklet featuring case studies of fatal accidents. This booklet depicts how these accidents occured and the learning points which could be drawn from these tragic mishaps. Produced in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower, this booklet serves as a useful training and educational material to all the construction stakeholders.

| Council Urge Shipyards to Ensure Worker Safety |
| In light of two serious accidents in shipyards this month, the Workplace Safety and Health Council will actively engage all shipyards within the next month. An alert has already been sent to all shipyards to remind them to follow the required safety measures when working in confined spaces. The Association of Singapore Marine Industries(ASMI) has also sent a circular to all its members to recommend a time-out for two undertakings.

| Safety in Spray Painting Work at Shipyards |
| The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council has sent out an email
alert to the industry on safety measures for spray painting work carried out in
confined spaces like water ballast tanks on board vessels. The advisory was sent
in view of the recent accident at a shipyard. |
